Learn about A-J Rose’s 20+ years of clinical psychology experience, EMDR accreditation, Medicare rebates, and session fees in northern Perth.
As a Clinical Psychologist, I have spent over two decades helping individuals navigate complex psychological challenges, process profound life changes, and recover from trauma. Since graduating in 2003, my career has spanned critical roles within major public health systems, community care frameworks and first responder settings.
In my private practice, I provide a safe, compassionate, and collaborative environment tailored to help you work through presenting difficulties and achieve therapeutic goals while building on your individual strengths. I use a range of evidence-based therapeutic frameworks including Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing. My focus is on providing a supportive space from which to deliver practical tools and meaningful therapy that helps to build long-term resilience, process the past, and achieve lasting, positive outcomes.
Outside of private practice I enjoy time at the beach, being in nature or watching a basketball game. I love animals and have a particular fondness for dogs, with plans for bringing canine assisted therapy into my practice in the future. I am always very happy to hear about your pets and recognise the tremendous enjoyment they can bring to our lives.

A clinical psychologist is a university-trained mental health professional who specialises in the assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of psychological conditions and complex mental health issues. In Australia, clinical psychologists undergo a minimum of six years of intensive university education and supervised training. They do not prescribe medication; instead, they use proven therapeutic frameworks (such as EMDR or CBT) to help clients process challenges, build resilience, and achieve long-term recovery.
Yes. If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP you can claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions.
The Rebate Amount: Because I am a Clinical Psychologist, my services qualify for the higher-tier Medicare rebate (MBS item 80010)
The Payment Process: You pay the full session fee upfront at the time of your appointment. The practice management system can then electronically process the Medicare claim on your behalf, and the rebate is typically deposited into your linked bank account within 24 to 48 hours. The remaining balance is your out-of-pocket "gap" cost.
Session Limits: Under the Medicare Better Access initiative, eligible clients can claim a maximum of 10 individual rebated sessions per calendar year (1 January – 31 December).
GP Review: Your initial GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan will usually cover your first 6 sessions. After your 6th session, a brief progress report is sent back to your doctor, and you will complete a quick review appointment with them to authorise a re-referral for the remaining 4 sessions of the year if continued support is needed.
If you have a current Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) a Medicare rebate will be processed for you on the day of your appointment. Please either bring your MHCP with you to your first appointment or feel free to email it directly. Alternatively your GP can send the information on your behalf.
No, you do not strictly need a referral to see me. You are welcome to email me directly and self-refer as a private client. However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions, you will need a specific referral from a medical professional (such as a GP ) before your first appointment. For insurance claims such as Workers Compensation, once your claim is 'Accepted' your insurance company will either make a referral on your behalf or provide you with your claim details so that you can arrange your booking directly. Please feel free to contact me if you are unsure or wish to discuss.
Yes. Telehealth appointments are available where clinically appropriate and are provided in the same way as in-person appointments, using a secure video platform.
Appointments are precious, if you need to change your appointment, please provide as much notice as possible so the time can be offered to someone else waiting for support.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, for cancellations or changes under 48 hours, 50% of the session rate will apply with no Medicare rebate. For cancellations or changes under 24 hours, 100% of the session rate will apply with no Medicare rebate.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly structured, evidence-based psychological treatment designed to help the brain process and heal from trauma, PTSD, and distressing life experiences.
When a person experiences a highly stressful or traumatic event, the brain's natural processing system can become overwhelmed, causing the memory to get "stuck" along with the original intense emotions, physical sensations, and negative self-beliefs. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation such as guided left-to-right eye movements, rhythmic tapping, or alternating sounds to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain while you briefly hold the memory in mind.
This dual-attention process activates the brain's natural healing mechanisms (similar to what happens during REM sleep), helping to "unstick" the memory. Over time, the memory is reprocessed and stored in a healthier, more neutral way—meaning you still remember the event, but it loses its painful emotional sting and no longer triggers overwhelming distress or physical reactions in your daily life. One of the greatest benefits of EMDR is that it allows for deep healing without requiring you to talk about the traumatic event in exhaustive detail.
